Inca Trail to Machu Picchu

During this eight days trip you will hike a portion of the ancient Inca trail for four days camping three nights to arrive to the Sun Gate, the exact same access point the Incas used to stepped in Machu Picchu citadel. You will also tour Cusco city, the surrounding archaeological sites and the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

Schedule by Day

  • Day 1 Lima
    • Upon your arrival, reception at the airport and transfer to the hotel.
    • Overnight at selected hotel at Lima.
  • Day 2 Lima - Cusco
    • Transfer to Lima airport to take the flight to Cusco city.
    • Transfer to the hotel.
    • Afternoon City Tour:
    • Visit the city declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. The tour will start at the temple of Koricancha, an ancient Inca palace where the order of the Dominicans built an incredible church that can still be seen there. Then visit the Main Square, where the Cathedral and the beautiful Church of the Society of Jesus, among other colonial buildings, are located. Continue to the San Cristóbal colonial chruch to enjoy a spectacular view of the city. Afterwards you will go on to the fortress of Sacsayhuaman, an Inca building known for its massive walls of hewn stone, also Qenko and Puca Pucara archaeological complexes.

  • Day 3 Sacred Valley
    • Half day visit to Ollantaytambo, a military, religious and agricultural center of the Incan Empire. The fortress is located on top of a mountain to allow them to protect the whole valley from invaders. From the highest spot you will be able to appreciate the narrow roads along with the channels that remain unaltered since Incan times.
    • Overnight at selected hotel at Sacred Valley.
    • Breakfast and lunch.
  • Day 4 Inca Trail
    • Around 5:30 am you will be picking up from your hotel to start the journey by bus towards 82 km. After checking in the controls you will start the hiking (approximately 6 hours of walking) at the edges of Urubamba River, to Llactapata archaeological site, where you will take lunch. The entire hike will last around 6 hours (13 kilometers or 8 miles) until the Huayllabamba camp.
    • Included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.
  • Day 5 Inca Trail
    • The greatest challenge: 11 kilometers of ascension to walk through the two highest passages, including at 4,200 m.s.n.m (13,780 ft.). This is the highest point of the whole hike, (approximately are 8 hours of walking) you will enjoy impressive landscapes of hills and peaks and the beautiful half tropical valley. The hike includes the visit to Runkurakay and Sayacmarca archaeological sites.
    • Camp at Pacaymayu.
    • Included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.
  • Day 6 Inca Trail
    • Today you will walk around 8 hours (only 16 kilometers / 6 miles) and most of the route is plane and full of slopes. You will have the chance to observe how the geography starts to change, from mountainous and dry, to green and half tropical. In the way visit to Phuyupatamarca and Intipata to arrive, finally to Wiñaywayna where the last camp of the trek will be install.

  • Day 7 Inca Trail
    • Early departure towards Inti Punku (Sun Gate), the entrance of the ancient Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, from here you will walk down along valleys, for around 2 more hours of walking to enjoy to a guided visit of this magical place. Discovered in 1911 by the American explorer, Hiram Bingham, this city is considered to be one of the most extraordinary examples of scenic architecture in the world. At the afternoon train back to Cusco.

  • Day 8 Cusco - Lima
    • Transfer from the hotel to the airport to take the flight to Lima.
    • Arrival and board the connecting international flight back home.

Additional Tours In Cusco

  • Full Day South Valley
    • Southeast of Cusco is the Tipon archeological center. Your excursion today includes a tour of the site to see long stone canals built by the Incans, representing the height of their hydraulic engineering skill. Afterwards, it’s a visit to Pikillacta, one of the most important Pre-Incan archeological centers. Next on the itinerary is Andahuaylillas town and its precious 17th century church that is a spectacular expression of Andean Baroque architecture.
  • The Barroco Route
    • You will be transferred from the city of Cusco to the city of Huaro to visit “La Capilla de la Virgen Purificada de Canincunca”, a chapel located next to Urcos Lagoon. This small church has some incredibly beautiful mural paintings which really makes it stand out. After that, you will continue towards the San Juan Bautista de Huaro Church, where you will be able to partake upon an amazing choir, reminiscent of colonial times. You will then head to Andahuaylillas to visit the San Pedro Apostol Church, emblematic of the location and known as the “American Sistine Chapel”. Although this church is famous for its beautiful murals, it is also one of the most astounding examples of religious popular Andean art. The tour will then head towards Pikillacta, where you will be able to visit on of the most important pre Inca archaeological complexes. Finally, you will head to the archaeological complex of Tipon, where you will have an amazing view of the stone canals that were built by the Incas. These canals represent the incredible abilities they had with regards to hydraulic engineering. A box lunch is included.
  • Zip Line
    • We left early in the morning for the Sacred Valley, this exciting tour will give you the opportunity to fly over this magnificent place in a safe and fun way. The zip-line features 6 lines or cables,from 100 to 500 mt, for a total of 2000 mt. The guide will give you an explanation of security and then start this adventure. The guide will hook to the cables, by means of a pulley fixed to the harness. To reach the first cable, you will do a 30-45 minutes hike, easy and via ferrata equipped in some parts for more safety. The lines have between 100 and 500mt, for a 2000 mt total. Each one is different from the other, largest one, fastest one, perfects.
