A city at the foothills of the Misti Volcano. Founded in 1540 on the site of an Incan village, it is the commercial center of southern Peru and northern Bolivia. Its population is 865,000.

The historic centre of Arequipa, built in volcanic sillar rock, represents an integration of European and native building techniques and characteristics, expressed in the admirable work of colonial masters and Creole and Indian masons. This combination of influences is illustrated by the city's robust walls, archways and vaults, courtyards and open spaces, and the intricate Baroque decoration of its facades.

The main attractions are the Cathedral, Church and Cloisters of the Society of Jesus, San Francisco Complex, Santa Catalina Monastery, La Recoleta Convent, Casa del Moral Goyeneche Mansion, Fundador Mansion, Yanahuara, Cayma, Sabandia, Yura, Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve, Colca Valley, Cotahuasi and Toro Muerto.

The average temperature is 46ºF (8ºC) through 71ºF (22ºC), and the city is at 7,660 feet (2,334 meters) above sea level.
