The Taquile Island is unique for many reasons. Although it is located in an almost exclusively Aimara region, its inhabitants speak only Quechua. On the island there are no vehicles, roads, police officers or electricity, and, curiously enough, no dogs.
Taquile is 6 km. (3.7 mi.) long and has several hills and many archeological ruins. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the people of Taquile is their solid sense of community, these people offer room and board to visitors in their own homes, and most of all, give an opportunity to share in the customs and way of life.
