The site of Toro Muerto is located in the south of Peru, on the western side of the Andean (Province of Castilla, department of Arequipa).

It lies on a large plateau of desert dominating the Valley of Majes at an altitude varying between 600 and 800 m. (1970 and 2625 ft.) It is 11 km (7 miles) long and 5 km (3 miles) wide, and is bordered to the east by a large cliff.

Numerous archaeological clues linked to these engravings where have been found on or close to the site. Potsherds have allowed the dating of the petroglyphs from the Wari period (7th century A.D.) until the Inca period (13th century A.D.), but clues to an earlier dating of these engravings could very possibly.
