UROS FLOATING ISLANDS

Uros is at 20 minutes from the city of Puno by boat. These are not truly floating islands, nor are they inhabited by Uros people. Their residents are Aimaras who have inherited the customs and way of life of the long - one Uros. Today, the inhabitants of these "islands" have organized themselves as the Uros - Chulluni community and, although they still hunt and fish, they manage tourist-directed activities in their territory.

Their live hood is based on the benefits of a unique plant: Totora reed, they use it to build their homes, boats and even the floating islands they live on. Totora reeds are a source of food for man and animals, a refuge for their hunting quarry and a vital toll for everyday activity.
