Ancash:
40 archaeological sites discovered in Chacas
An Italian research team discovered archaeoloical remains at
an altitude of over 4,000 meters, in the Chacas Valley, in Ancash. The remains
of the buildings date back to the 8th century B.C. and reveal that were part
of a very important culture that was a link between the Eastern Andes and
the Coast. The investigations, which specialists from the University of Bologna
began in the area six years ago, have resulted in the find of more than 40
archaeological sites spread out over a 20-kilometer area. The group of sites
includes one very large city and a very old ceremonial center, contemporary
of Chavin, with numerous stone sculptures. Specialists are proposing to design
tourism circuits so that travelers may visit these archaeological sites, crossing
through the varied scenery of the Peruvian Andes.

Cusco and Machu Picchu
In September 2003, PeruRail invites you to step aboard the 'Hiram Bingham',
and follow those historic footsteps in the new luxury train service which
bears the crest of the man who might very well have been the first tourist
to Machu Picchu.
Using carriages purchased in Singapore, and refurbished in Peru, this daily
addition to PeruRail's existing fleet of Vistadome, backpacker and local services
on the Cusco - Machu Picchu route, has been given a distinctive blue and gold
livery with elegant interior upholstery in warm, inviting tones. The rake
consists of 4 cars - 2 dining cars, a bar car and a kitchen car, with an initial
capacity of 84 passengers (2 coaches for 42 passengers each). The general
style of the carriages is in line with those on PeruRail's 'Andean Explorer'
train which operates between Cusco and Lake Titicaca in Southern Peru and
reflect the luxury of the 1920s Pullman era.
Baños del Inca tourism complex in Cajamarca to undergo improvements
A work team has been established to develop and upgrade the Inca Baths tourist
complex as the first flagship of thermal spring centers in Peru and Latin
America. This team is made up of government representatives from the central,
regional and local levels as well as the private business sectors. One of
the work team's first agreements was to create a financial fund with the participation
of the regional government and Prodelca, which will contribute US$150,000.
The development of the Baños del Inca tourism complex is just the first step
in a project to convert the district into a Thermal Springs Village to be
well-known in Peru and worldwide for its cultural riches, the benefits of
its thermal waters and the beauty of its scenery.
