Editors’ note: A lordy issue

Dear Readers,
In this issue we rediscover the magic of the Lord of Sipan visiting the Royal Tombs of Sipan Museum, the one year old museum that exclusively gives shelter to the Lord of Sipan after his multiples trips around the world.
Also, learn about the procession of the Lord of Miracles, the biggest religious festivity in Peru. Every October, the Christ of Pachacamilla, also known as the Lord of Miracles, goes around Lima with tens of thousands of followers.
In November we celebrate our 20th anniversary, and we started last week by bringing several kids from Ayacucho (one of the poorest places in Peru) to Lima. We gave them a city tour, take them to the zoo and the beach (they never saw the beach before) and finally to a party for them, and we assure you that it was one of the most beautiful moments in their lifes. So click on our 20th anniversry logo to read more about this charming experience.
Explore the north of our country, discover ancient funerary rituals, pray along the streets of Lima, get in touch with the latest turistic news about Peru and see a child smile in this lordy issue.
Regards
José and Cynthia

Main Article: Royal Tombs of Sipan Museum
In the fourth century AD, the Mochica buried one of their greatest warlords. He was buried with his head towards the south, his nose and ears were covered with gold and his feet were clothed in thin silver for his voyage to the life after death. Nowadays, we call him The Lord of Sipan.
Ancient Peru is known as the land of gold and mainly related with the history of the Inca Empire. Not many people know that this remarkable but short-lived empire, which flourished for a century before the arrival of the Spaniards (sixteenth century), was preceded by a number of superb and highly developed civilizations and cultures, to name a few Nasca, Paracas and Wari. Another important pre-Inca civilization was the Moche. Its origins date back to the first century BC to its fall in the eighth century AD.
When you travel to the Northern coast of Peru, take a break in your journey at the Museum "Tumbas Reales de Sipan, located on the outskirts of the city of Chiclayo in Lambayeque, it is a must for Peruvians and visitors...

The other, but not less important, lord
Lord of Miracles is Peru's most heavily attended religious festivity, the Lord of Miracles -also known as the Christ of Pachacamilla-is celebrated by all stratas of society in homage to the image of the Crucified Christ.
This procession, which gathers together the largest number of believers in South America, dates back to colonial times, when a slave, brought over from Angola, drew the image of a black Christ on the walls of a wretched hut in the plantation of Pachacamilla, near Lima. The image stayed on the wall despite several attempts to erase it.
This was to spark widespread devotion for the image, which survived intact on the wall despite an earthquake in 1746 which leveled all surrounding buildings. As a result of this event, worship of the image rose to new heights, until it became what is today the most widely venerated image in the city of Lima. The heart of the celebration is one of the largest processions to take place every year in the Americas, where tens of thousands of the faithful dress in purple tunics, singing hymns and praying as they accompany the image. The litter which bears the painting weighs two tons and is borne on the shoulders of believers who set out on the traditional 24-hour procession from the church of Las Nazarenas, crossing downtown Lima until it reaches the church of La Merced in Barrios Altos. Around this time of year, the streets fill with vendors of a wide variety of typical dishes and sweets, such as the famous Turrón de Doña Pepa. In October is "purple month" when women wear purple dresses and men don their purple cloaks to accompany the Lord of Miracles image in its four processions through the city.

Cusco is the world's second major travel destination
The British magazine Wanderlust, one of the most prestigious in the world and the leading magazine of its kind in Great Britain, granted the Wanderlust Travel Awards 2003 to the city of Cusco, for being the second best travel destination among 557 cities worldwide. First place was awarded to Dubrovnik, the Croatian resort on the shores of the Adriatic Sea, which has become Europe's most fashionable destination. Cusco, as opposed to other destinations, has managed to keep its level of attraction among British tourists, since in the previous edition of the Wanderlust awards, given in 2001, Cusco was also ranked in second place, after Sydney, Australia (which ranked seventh in the latest voting).
