THE BEGINNING OF THE END OF AN EMPIRE During Hayna Capac inca government, the Spaniards painted by the Peruvians as: "strange bearded men which sail in floating wooden houses" arrived in the shores of Tawantinsuyo empire. It was 1527. During that time, this empire was the largest of America. Its extension was from Pasto in Colombia at the north, till Maule River in Chile by the south. On October 15th 1532, the spaniard conqueror Francisco Pizarro, saw the city of Cajamarca, place where the Inca Atahualpa was resting after winning a bloody battle with his brother Huascar for the right to govern the empire. Cajamarca was a stone city with a valley at the end; it also had a trapezoidal square. The camp of the Inca was the most impressive matter for the spanish people. It was huge. A sense of inferiority come over the spaniards soldiers, they presage their dead in that city. Pizarro saw this, and immediately ordered to go straight to the center of the city; they arrived around five in the afternoon. It was deserted; Pizarro took the main square and set up the soldiers against a possible Inca attack. Then he set an ambush to force the Inca to come over that point. He sent Hernando de Soto and Hernando Pizarro to ask for an interview with him, in this appointment Atahualpa just said this words: "Get back all you have stolen until this moment" ATAHUALPA'S CAPTURE At dawn of October 16th, Pizarro set up his troops, the horsemen will be at the storehouse of the square, the infantrymen behind them, and high in a fortress will be just a few artillerymen with the only useful cannon. The surroundings were closed with fences and large and width sticks. Finally, Pizarro and some soldiers get into the "Amaruhuasi" or House of the Snake, an isolated building in the center of the square, and from which he will go out to take Atahualpa as a prisoner. The sign to start the battle will be a shot and wave a white towel. The final purpose was to beat or to die, but the Inca warriors were numerous, just a miracle will give to the spaniards the victory; everyone seems to be convicted to die. During his slowly way to the battle field, Atahualpa over his golden litter decorated with parrot and macaw's feathers thought the enemy were less than they, and he had thousands of warriors. They will capture the spaniards, enslave and kill them. With these thoughts in mind, he arrived to the main square of the stone city after his soldiers. Since it was empty, the Inca ask for the spaniards, then, abruptly show up Fray Vicente, dressed up in green with the only soldier that learn "quechua", the language of the Incas, and Felipillo, a local, as translators. The friar, got closer to the Inca with a strange thing in his hand, it was his prayer book. He started to talk to him, and recited the "Requirement" especially compound before war time. With this formalism, the spaniards justify the war against the Incas, because they refuse to be vassals of Charles I, emperor of Spain. The Inca heard the long speech and got bore. He ask about the reasoning of this lecture, Fray Vicente reply showing a book. Atahualpa asked for it, tried to open it and threw it to the ground. The friar got scared, and ran away towards Amaruhuasi shouting to Pizarro: "Atahualpa became Lucifer, he had throw the bible to the ground! Get out and fight him, they will kill us all! The harquebus shout, and the white towel wave. The cannon roared and the trumpets sang. Horsemen came out to the square over the astonishing Atahualpa warriors. They took all the entrances, and nobody could get in or out. In this point, Pizarro show up, walked towards the Inca, the Peruvians did not understand what was going on. The Indians got back because the horses were pushing them. They fell down, trample each other, throttling and killing themselves. Meanwhile Pizarro captured "The Son of the Sun", Atahualpa, he was brought to the Amaruwasi. The square was cover of dead people, the few incas which was not trampled, was dead because they killed each other during the battle. The Inca's capture was very quick because the appearance of the horses. They show up rapidly, and with a unknown speed for the incas, the great weight of its horseshoes crush over the fallen ones. Cajamarca was a victory for the Spaniards mainly because of them. The capture happened on November 16th 1532. This is an important date for the Europeans because in their faith in the "Sacred War" this was a miracle of God, and for the incas in their belief in the "Magic War" was a cosmic cataclysm. THE PAYMENT IN GOLD AND SILVERThe captured Inca offer to Pizarro a room full of gold and two more full of silver in exchange of his freedom. First, Pizarro was incredulous about this, but he finally accepted this proposal, caravans of camelids started to arrive with the metals. Atahualpa had some of his privileges during his time in prison; he was attended by his women and servants. He also did some "friendship" with Pizarro, his brother and Hernando de Soto. Because during the night the soldiers in charge of his custody stole the gold and silver, Atahualpa was not able to accomplish his promise. The governor Francisco Pizarro though Atahualpa was a valuable hostage alive, but dead will be just a corpse. Though the rumors talked about a great army coming to rescue their leader, immediately he sent a commission to find out what was going on. If this was true, then he will execute the Inca, if not he will not kill him, and probably sent him to Spain. But the rumors were confirmed, and the convicted Inca was judged by a martial court presided by Pizarro himself, Atahualpa was convicted to dead in stake. He did not understand the cause of this sentence, he denied the coming army, and one more time his words were mistranslated by Felipillo. The sentence was accomplish in July 26th 1533. Because Atahualpa accepted to be baptized in the last minute, the sentence was commute to garrote; he died with the entirety of an Inca warrior. The truth was the army never showed up. What happened? Was it a made up of the Spaniards?. There is no answer for this, the only truth is Atahualpa was dead because a non existent army. |
